The one-to-one committed relationship is the cornerstone of the family. The skills necessary to build and maintain a successful one-to-one relationship are learnable. I like to teach these skills.
I enjoy teaching couples, and watching them learn to speak to each other with gentle respect and kindness, and learn conflict resolution skills that they can use to avoid escalation into ugliness, disrespect and despair.
I like to work with couples who have lost their ability to speak and listen to each other without judgement, blame and defensiveness. Once couples begin to learn the skills for this kind of dialogue, they can begin to trust each other again, and begin to establish an atmosphere of Safety, which is essential for a successful relationship.
We begin by scheduling one appointment only. This gives us a chance to meet in person, and talk about couples' goals, hopes and expectations in doing this work. This also is an opportunity for them to have some exposure to what we do and how we do it. Then we can decide together what step 2 should be.
