The reason I chose to specialize in marriage and couples counseling is….:

Graduate school took a toll on my first marriage, which did not survive. The pain of that experience motivated me to learn how relationships worked and how they didn’t work. After working with and learning from thousands of couples, I continue to learn from the couples I work with.
My current marriage is going strong after almost 40 years with off and on struggles applying my own prescriptions. This gives me an added appreciation of how difficult some of the repair work can be.
If I knew then, in my first marriage, what I know now about long-term relationships, we probably would not have divorced. I want to help others learn how to change a relationship that feels awful into one that feels wonderful.

What you most enjoy about working with couples is….:

When a couple is in treatment, more of each person’s life is present in the office than when a person comes for individual treatment. For married people, this relationship is core to contentment. I most enjoy seeing that as the marriage relationship improves, so do many other aspects of each individual’s life.

Are there kinds of couples or issues that you work with a lot?:

Angry and arguing couples are a large part of my practice. I help them understand why this occurs and teach steps to avoid conflict or turn it around once it’s started.
The other large part of my practice is couples with unfaithfulness and other trust issues. I help them understand the development of infidelity in their relationship and help with character-building, or re-building, for one or both partners, as appropriate.

What are the steps to becoming a client in my practice?:

I answer my own phone. I give out my cellphone number. Scheduling an appointment begins with a phone call. My typical turnaround for voicemail is a few hours, but unusual circumstances might delay my response by a day or so.
Working out an appointment time will depend on the couple’s flexibility. Within standard office hours, scheduling could be within a day or two. Late afternoon, evening, or early morning might take a week or so. I appreciate that people usually call when they are in great pain and I work to arrange the soonest available day and time.
