The reason I chose to specialize in marriage and couples counseling is….:
Relationships matter; human beings are wired to be in relationship. All of us want to feel heard, understood, and accepted especially by our life partner. Helping couples to improve the quality of their relationship is important work. It not only improves their health and quality of life, it also impacts the well-being of their children and extended family. I am motivated, challenged, and gratified by this important work.
What you most enjoy about working with couples is….:
When couples feel they can't solve their problems they can feel stuck in a pattern of behaviors and emotions that seem set in stone. They do a "dance" together that can be painful and leave them feeling hopeless. I help couples to identify the individual and couple patterns that contribute to their discomfort and I help them to shift the steps of that dance to add flexibility, trust, and positive emotional attachment to their relationship. I see myself as a choreographer. I find that challenging, creative and motivating.
Are there kinds of couples or issues that you work with a lot?:
I work with lots of couples who are on "the brink" in their marriage; trying to decide whether couples therapy can help or whether to move to separation and/or divorce. As a marriage specialist, a discernment counselor, and collaborative divorce coach I have a perspective and unique skills to help couples navigate this crossroad. I can help them take a realistic look at the best next steps for them.
